The Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in Los Angeles in 1983 with lead singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Michael “Flea” Balzary, guitarist Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons. Having met at Fairfax High School, the original name for the band was Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. Their original purpose was to play a one-off, one-time show. The beginning lineup was fluid and shaky, as Slovak and Irons had other commitments. They have gone through many line-up changes, triumphs, and setbacks over the course of their music career, but none of that has ever stopped them from being a force to be reckoned with in the history of rock music. Over 31 years and 10 studio albums, they have created a funk/rock hybrid body of art that has been massively influential on many younger bands and rock-fan boys and girls, thanks in part to the ferocious, unmatched bass playing of Flea. Alongside the grunge movement, their sound shaped what was to come in the ‘90’s and beyond.

Nearly 30 years after forming, The Red Hot Chili Peppers received induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in April 2012. The induction was credited to Kiedis, Flea, Frusciante, Smith, Klinghoffer, Slovak, Irons, and Martinez. Navarro and Sherman were omitted from the induction as the rules state that they must be a current member or have played on more than one official studio recording. Three of the bands albums, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication, and By The Way, are ranked among the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine. After many changes, setbacks, and triumphs, The Red Hot Chili Peppers continue to push forward, creating music that will be enjoyed for many generations to come.
